Make 2015 the year of green investing

The first Green Bond was issued by the EU in 2007 with a total of 600 million Euros for a 5 year period. This first bond began the Green Bond movement that has since grown to $506 billion in 2014. Canada got on board issuing Green Bonds from Export Development Canada and the Ontario government in 2014. So what are Green Bonds and how do they work?
A Green Bond functions much like any other bond. Often issued by a government or corporation a bond is a loan. Divestment made headlines in 2014 as some major institutions decided to move their money away from heavy polluting fossil fuel companies. This movement is great and it is good to see universities and major institutions putting their money where their mouth is. An added benefit is that with increased divestment, it has never been easier for the average person to invest their money safely, with reliable growth while supporting the industries and ideals they believe in.
Divestment takes away financial support from unsustainable industries and sends a clear message. That same money however, can be invested to support projects that help the transition to the Green Economy. 2015 can be the year you stop fighting against your money and instead make your money work toward the sustainable society we are trying to build.
