Know Your Green Product Certifications

It is important that when we shop for sustainable products we understand which certifications are legitimate. We want to know that what we are buying truly is what it claims to be. So I would like to cover some of the different certifications that can be found when looking at different products.
One of the more common seals that you will find is the FSC seal of approval. FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. This seal is used to certify wood products. It certifies that the wood was sustainably harvested. This means that the wood was taking from protected forests. Typically a protected forest is maintained to ensure it is around for future generations. One method used instead of clear cutting the forest and moving on it is clearing small sections while at the same time planting new sections. So as it is cleared it is also re-grown and carefully managed.
