How to make cattle more climate friendly? Seedy cows!
Methane (CH4) has a greenhouse-gas footprint 20 times stronger than carbon dioxide (CO2) and contributes around 20% of the increases in global warming, although it has much lower concentration in the atmosphere than CO2. Agriculture is responsible for almost 50 % of methane emissions, with three quarters being produced by growing rice and livestock farming (especially cattle breeding) (1).
Methane is produced in the rumen of livestock (1st chamber in the alimentary canal that serves as primary site for microbial fermentation of ingested feed) during the normal process of feed digestion and represents a significant loss of feed energy that increases feed costs. That's why we also call these animals ruminants.
Recently, many researchers have worked on different solutions to reduce methane emissions from farms and concluded that improvements in livestock feeding and farm management are the two main ways.
