On Saturday, March 28 at 8:30 PM local time the lights will go dark in communities around the world as we celebrate Earth Hour. The World Wildlife Fund sponsors this annual event which has been taking place since 2007 and has supported a wide range of environmental issues. The first Earth Hour took place in Sydney, Australia as a symbolic stand against climate change and has grown into the largest mass participation event in history. Last year hundreds of millions of people in over 7,000 cities in 162 countries and territories participated with many countries taking actions beyond the hour.
This year marks the ninth annual Earth Hour which was first initiated in Sydney, Australia in an effort to create awareness and stand up against climate change. This is an hour which brings the global community together towards a common goal of protecting our planet. It has since grown into the world’s largest mass participation event in history.
This year Earth Hour will take place at 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday March 28th, 2015.
Earth hour is not simply just turning off one’s lights for an hour, though this is a symbolic act which inspires and unites people to a common goal, it is also meant to stimulate action beyond this initial hour and create an interconnected global community whose goal is to build a sustainable future for the planet.
We are about eight months away from what has the potential to be one of the most important meetings human beings have ever conducted. In November and December 2015 delegations from nearly 200 countries will gather with the goal to reach an agreement on greenhouse gas emissions reductions at the UN climate summit in Paris. While bureaucracy and politics have hindered a binding agreement with verifiable targets in the past, that can’t be an option this time. Building on the slow progress of years of previous meetings in Copenhagen, Lima, and Kyoto and other locations, delegates are in an ideal position this time around to such a historic agreement.
